The Low Calorie Thick Shake Recipe

If you want a filling shake without the calories, then this is for you!  It’s very simple, and the only calories are from the protein powder (which you can’t really avoid).  The shake will be thick even though it doesn’t contain any cream or “milk.”  (I explain all the different “milks” in this article here and how to make shakes thicker in this article here.)

Ingredients (240 calories using the Optimum Nutrition protein powder):

  • 8 oz. water
  • 2/3 cup ice
  • 2 scoops protein powder
  • 1/2 teaspoons of xanthan gum (which I buy from Amazon here)

Instructions:

Add the water and ice first to the blender, then the protein powder, and lastly the xanthan gum on top of the protein powder (so it doesn’t mix with the water before you blend it).  Blend well and drink immediately (before the ice melts).

Additional Info:

  • Calories:  240 (if you use the Optimum Nutrition protein powder – read this article here for the best protein powders)
  • If you find it too thick, then add less xanthan gum.  Note that you need a good blender to blend the ice well as no one wants to drink lumps of ice!  Read this article here on how to find the best blender.  I would not suggest adding more than 1 teaspoon xanthan gum in this recipe as it produces too thick of a consistency!
